Security cameras to go up in four Elk Grove parks
By Loretta Kalb
Security cameras will be installed in four Elk Grove area parks at a cost of nearly $31,000, the board of the Cosumnes Community Services District decided Wednesday night.
The board, in a 4-1 vote with board member Douglas McElroy opposed, authorized the staff to install the remote-control camera systems to combat vandalism and graffiti.
The cameras can tilt, zoom and pan and pick up the detail on a car license plate at 500 feet. They are capable of being read remotely by computers in police cars and in the Elk Grove police dispatch center. The first cameras are to be placed in Miwok, Baker, Beeman and Kloss parks.
Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Cameron Slye told board members the initial park sites were selected based on six months of statistics about reported problems.
McElroy supported the idea of using the cameras, but he voted against the measure because he disagreed how the district planned to allocate costs.
